Kenya to Southern Sudan Highway gets World Bank funding
The World Bank has announced US$512 million inย funding for the construction of a link highway between Kenya and South Sudan.
The project also includes the laying of fibre optic cable to enhance the communication infrastructure in the region.
Robert Mugo, Director ofย Shared Services at the Kenyan ICT Authority said โThe entire Kenya-South Sudan road construction project and the laying of the optic fibre cable is set for completion in two year’s time, we have implemented the road and information superhighway that form the most effective way of accelerating development.โ
The fibre optic cable will be installed along the Lokichar to Nedapal highway during the roads construction andย will beย part of the Eastern Africa Regional Transport, Trade and Development Facilitation Project.
Theย project isย anticipated to generate increasedย trade between the two countries enhancing their communication and transportation systems. Kenyaโs current exports to South Sudan make up almostย 25% of Southern Sudanโsย imports.
