The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has signed an agreement with the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) to carry out feasibility studies and designs for the construction and development of the Nairobi Western Bypass.

The Nairobi Western Bypass will be a 4-lane high-capacity expressway with the aim of diverting traffic from the city centre, and connect with the Southern Bypass at Gitaru and the Northern Bypass at Ruaka. The construction of interchanges and overpasses for major junctions at Wangige, Kihara, Ndenderu and Ruaka will be included.

The Nairobi Western Bypass project will be implemented as an Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contract (EPC), with a cost estimate of US$169million (KSh17.3 billion), and funded through a concessionary loan from the Government of China.

Currently, the Nairobi Northern and Eastern Bypasses are already complete, whilst the Nairobi Southern Bypass is nearing completion.
