Parsons to prepare Seismic Studies on two Montreal Bridges
The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated have awarded Parsons and CIMA+ the mandate to prepare seismic studies of both the Jacques-Cartier Bridge and the Clement Bridge to evaluate structural integrity and prolong the service life of these important infrastructure assets.
“Bridges are an important part of the transportation network in any city and are particularly vital in the island city of Montreal,” said Mike Johnson, Parsons Group President. “As lifeline structures, bridges need to be carefully evaluated to test the stability of the bridge in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes.”
The 5‑lane Jacques-Cartier Bridge is an icon of the Montreal region and has been a fixture of the city’s skyline since 1930. It currently carries 38.5 million vehicles a year across the Saint Lawrence River to and from Montreal and the south shore at Longueuil, Quebec. The 3.4‑km-long bridge includes a 590‑m cantilever main span composed of two steel trusses.
The Clement bridge is a 330‑m, 8‑span, precast-concrete girder bridge linking Montreal to Nun’s island. Built in 1966, the 4‑lane bridge provides access to the Champlain Bridge.
