International Day of Supply Chain, Logistics, and Transportation
On Sunday, November 3rd, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) proudly launches the inaugural International Day of Supply Chain, Logistics, and Transportation. This significant date not only celebrates the institute’s rich history—marking 105 years since its establishment—but also recognises the indispensable contributions of logistics and transport professionals who keep our world connected.
With a theme of ‘One Network, One Global Community – Celebrating the Impact of Supply Chain, Logistics and Transportation,’ this event highlights the interconnected nature of the industry. It serves as a reminder of how logistics and transport professionals bridge gaps between people, businesses, and communities around the globe.
According to the United Nations, over 450 million individuals are employed in supply chain, logistics, and transportation roles worldwide, accounting for nearly 13% of the global workforce. This staggering number illustrates the immense impact of this sector on daily life, ensuring that commerce flows smoothly and enabling travel for work, education, and leisure.
Global Celebrations and Initiatives
The International Day of Supply Chain, Logistics, and Transportation is set to feature a plethora of events, initiatives, and activities coordinated by CILT and its member organisations worldwide. These include:
- A launch event in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with CILT Sri Lanka, to kickstart the celebrations.
- The Career and Life Formula (CALF) Programme, spearheaded by Women in Logistics and Transport, designed to empower young managers and cultivate effective leadership skills within the industry.
- The release of a comprehensive Shipping & Maritime Webinar eBook, courtesy of CILT Singapore, providing valuable resources and insights for professionals.
These initiatives are just a glimpse of the activities lined up to honour this global day, aiming to elevate awareness of the critical role that logistics and transport play in everyday life.
The Birth of CILT
CILT was founded on November 3rd, 1919, at the illustrious Savoy Hotel in London. In the wake of the First World War, a group of senior transport professionals recognised the failures in logistics and the movement of goods during that tumultuous period. Determined to improve these systems, they established a professional body focused on promoting and coordinating the study of logistics and transport across all sectors.
In 1926, CILT was awarded a Royal Charter, cementing its status as the leading professional institution for logistics and transport. Today, with over 30,000 members in more than 40 countries, CILT continues to represent the world’s logistics, transport, and supply chain professionals, fostering the knowledge and skills essential for navigating the complexities of modern commerce.
Commemorating Modern Contributions
As the logistics and transport sector evolves, so too does CILT’s mission. The International Day of Supply Chain, Logistics, and Transportation aims to honour not just the institute’s legacy but also the innovations and advancements driven by millions of professionals dedicated to keeping the wheels of the global economy turning.
Chief Teete Owusu-Nortey, International President at CILT, remarked: “CILT’s work in logistics, transport and supply chain has kept industries all over the world moving and communities thriving for over a century. It’s amazing to be part of something that plays such a crucial role in the global economy, and we are excited to celebrate this on our first International Day of Supply Chain, Logistics and Transportation.”
Owusu-Nortey’s words resonate with the thousands of professionals whose efforts ensure that vital goods and services reach their destinations. Their commitment underpins the smooth functioning of global trade, making this day a truly momentous occasion.
