Manitowoc Unveils Asia’s Most Powerful Topless Tower Crane
Manitowoc has raised the stakes in construction innovation with the launch of the Potain MCT 2205, its largest topless tower crane from the Asia range.
Announced at bauma China 2024, this powerhouse combines cutting-edge flat-top design with impressive performance metrics, setting new standards for tower cranes built at Manitowoc’s Zhangjiagang facility in China.
With a maximum lifting capacity of 80 tonnes and an 80-metre jib, the MCT 2205 offers unparalleled versatility for modern construction sites. The crane can handle heavy loads up to 26.3 metres at full capacity, while still delivering a remarkable 23.5-tonne payload at the maximum jib length. It’s no surprise this model is already generating buzz among contractors tackling infrastructure mega-projects and power plants.
Efficiency Meets Performance
The MCT 2205’s flat-top design offers significant advantages over traditional hammerhead cranes. These include simplified transport, faster assembly, and a lower operational profile—ideal for congested urban sites where space is at a premium. This innovative configuration also minimises interference with nearby cranes, making it a top choice for bustling construction hubs.
Despite its massive capacity, the crane’s transport efficiency is noteworthy. The entire top-slewing portion, including all 11 jib sections, fits into just 16 trailers or containers. Such compact logistics reduce on-site complexity and speed up deployment.
Additionally, the MCT 2205 utilises Potain’s proven mast telescoping system, compatible with R99A or R910A mast sections. This ensures stable operation even at greater heights, making it versatile enough for a wide range of projects.
Impressive Load Charts and Versatility
Manitowoc has equipped the MCT 2205 with advanced capabilities to handle heavy loads across varying distances. When fitted with PA950 fixing angles, the crane achieves a height under hook of 71 metres, extending to an impressive 99.9 metres with PA952 fixing angles. These configurations allow for heavy lifting even at extended reaches.
Key load-handling features include:
- Maximum Capacity: 80 tonnes between 5 and 26.3 metres.
- Full Jib Payload: 23.5 tonnes at 80 metres.
- Customised Jib Configurations: Handles up to 72.9 tonnes at the end of a four-section, 30-metre jib assembly.
- Counterjib Options: Two sizes—25.2 metres and 20.2 metres—offer flexibility for tight, congested sites.
With up to 124,000 kg of ballast, the MCT 2205 ensures stability, even under demanding conditions. This makes it an optimal choice for large-scale projects requiring precision and power.
Cutting-Edge Engineering
The Potain MCT 2205 isn’t just about brute strength; it also boasts advanced technology to enhance usability. At its heart is the ergonomic V140S Vision Cab, designed for operator comfort and efficiency. Paired with Manitowoc’s 280 LVFC 200 Optima hoisting winch, the crane delivers exceptional lifting speeds of up to 12 m/min for 80-tonne loads.
Additional technological highlights include:
- Hoisting Power: A 280 hp (212 kW) motor driving 1,007 metres of rope.
- Trolley Mechanism: The 25 DVFC 35 trolley, with a 25 hp (18.5 kW) motor, offers precise horizontal movements at adjustable speeds up to 25 m/min.
- Rotational Precision: Four RVFC 194 Optima+ slewing motors ensure smooth and controlled rotation of the upper structure.
Together, these features deliver a seamless and efficient lifting experience, making the MCT 2205 a game-changer for contractors.
Designed for Mega Projects
Kwong Joon Leong, Regional Product Manager at Manitowoc, highlighted the strategic intent behind the MCT 2205: “Manitowoc has leveraged its decades of expertise in developing large-capacity tower cranes to design a topless crane that meets our customers’ lifting requirements in this new era of construction. We are already seeing a great deal of interest from those working on large infrastructure projects, power plants, and other mega projects that require the lifting of very heavy loads.”
By catering to the needs of contractors managing massive undertakings, Manitowoc solidifies its position as a leader in engineered lifting solutions. The crane’s ability to deliver heavy loads efficiently and safely across demanding sites makes it an invaluable asset.
