Five employees started building software for the ready-mix concrete industry in 1976. Fifty years later, Command Alkon says its systems sit behind more than 690,000 dispatched loads each day, track around 60,000 trucks and support 20,000 production installations spanning ready mix, aggregates, asphalt and cement.
Those numbers give some measure of how far construction materials technology has travelled. The first problem was relatively contained: replace manual processes inside individual concrete businesses with systems capable of handling accounting, dispatch and plant automation. The modern problem is considerably larger. Producers increasingly want production, orders, dispatch, vehicles, tickets, payments and operational data to work as parts of the same digital environment.
Command Alkon has spent much of its 50-year history accumulating the pieces needed to do that. Its strategy now extends beyond automating individual functions towards connecting much of the digital infrastructure around the movement of heavy construction materials from plant to jobsite. Command Cloud, introduced in 2024, is intended to bring that increasingly broad portfolio together.

From Plant Automation to Connected Operations
The origins of Command Alkon lie in two businesses approaching the same industry from different directions. Command Data developed accounting and dispatch systems for ready-mix concrete producers, while Alkon Corporation concentrated on plant automation. Their eventual combination in the early 2000s brought together two functions that remain fundamental to materials production: deciding what needs to be produced and dispatched, and controlling the equipment that actually produces it.
The environment they were addressing is unusually demanding for business software. Concrete cannot simply wait indefinitely in a warehouse until somebody needs it. Asphalt production and paving operations similarly depend on tightly coordinated plant, truck and site activity. Aggregate operations have their own requirements around weighing, ticketing, inventory and vehicle movements.
A software failure in many industries creates administrative inconvenience. In heavy materials, poor information can quickly become an operational problem involving idle trucks, missed delivery slots, plant queues, rejected material or construction crews waiting on site.

The specialised nature of those processes explains much of Command Alkon’s development. Rather than expanding into general enterprise software, the company has remained concentrated on heavy building materials while broadening the number of operations it can handle within that market.
Building the Portfolio
Some of that expansion came through internal product development, and a considerable part through acquisition. ConAd contributed technology that became part of Command Alkon’s ready-mix quality control offering, while JWS Corporation’s Apex product line extended its position in bulk-material scale ticketing. FiveCubits, Ruckit, Libra, Trimble’s Construction Logistics business, Digital Fleet and Marcotte Systems subsequently broadened the portfolio across production, dispatch, logistics and fleet operations.
Together, those businesses helped extend Command Alkon beyond individual plant and dispatch systems. That matters in operations where information has traditionally been divided between plant controls, dispatch offices, weighbridges, truck systems, accounting software and spreadsheets. Each application may work perfectly well on its own while leaving employees to reconcile the gaps between them.
Acquiring more applications does not automatically solve that problem. It can create another one if a supplier ends up with a collection of products that remain technologically separate. Command Alkon’s present challenge is therefore as much about integration as product breadth, with Command Cloud carrying much of the responsibility for bringing those capabilities together.
Command Cloud
Introduced in 2024, Command Cloud provides the architecture through which Command Alkon is seeking to connect production, dispatch, fleet and financial operations. Heavy materials presents a demanding environment for that integration because digital systems have to interact with physical production and delivery operations that cannot simply stop while information catches up.
A concrete producer may be coordinating orders, mix designs, batching, vehicle availability, dispatch, delivery status, electronic tickets and invoicing across several plants and a large fleet. Aggregates and asphalt businesses introduce different production and material-handling requirements, but the underlying need for reliable information between operational stages remains.
Command Alkon describes Command Cloud as having an API-open architecture, allowing customers to connect other applications and retain parts of their existing technology estate rather than replacing everything at once. That is a practical consideration in an industry containing both multinational producers and independent businesses with decades of accumulated equipment and software.
The objective is a connected quote-to-cash environment in which information generated during production and delivery remains available through the commercial process. Instead of operational information being assembled retrospectively from separate systems, production, dispatch and fleet activity can be viewed within the same environment.
Willoughby argues that the value of the platform rests heavily on the company’s accumulated understanding of the operations underneath it.
“Generic platforms cannot replicate what we’ve built,” said Willoughby. “We know what a good pour looks like, what it takes to keep a fleet moving under real pressure, and what separates a plant that’s actually running well from one that just looks like it is. That knowledge is baked into everything weβve built for the past 50 years, and itβs not something anyone can shortcut.”
The competitive claim is Command Alkon’s own, but the underlying question is a genuine one for industrial software. Cloud infrastructure, APIs and artificial intelligence are increasingly accessible technologies. Detailed understanding of batching, dispatch, material movements, truck cycles and plant operations is harder to acquire quickly.

The quality and integration of that information will be critical. Artificial intelligence applied across fragmented, inconsistent or poorly connected systems inherits those weaknesses. Command Alkon therefore enters the AI period with an advantage that has relatively little to do with the novelty of AI itself: it already operates close to the physical processes generating the data.
Operational Knowledge
Heavy construction materials businesses also depend heavily on experienced plant operators, dispatchers, drivers and managers who understand local operations in considerable detail. Some of that knowledge exists in software and operating procedures. Much remains with the people who have spent years learning how particular plants, customers, routes and jobs behave.
As experienced employees retire, retaining that knowledge becomes a technology problem as well as a recruitment problem. Command Alkon says it is investing in mobile-first applications and more accessible learning resources intended partly to reduce dependence on institutional knowledge. Better interfaces can simplify tasks, while connected systems can make information available to employees who previously had to know where to find it or whom to ask.
There are limits to how far software can replace experience in operations involving variable materials, traffic, weather, machinery and construction schedules. The more realistic objective is to capture enough operational knowledge that a new employee does not have to rediscover everything from the beginning.
Fifty Years of Specialisation
Command Alkon now reports more than 2,800 customers in over 80 countries, ranging from individual plants to multinational materials groups. Its expansion has taken it well beyond the ready-mix market in which its predecessors began.
Yet the business has remained unusually narrow in another sense. Concrete, aggregates, asphalt and cement are closely related parts of the construction supply chain, and many of the problems Command Alkon addresses still revolve around producing material correctly and getting the right load to the right place at the right time.
In 1976, digitising dispatch or automating a batching plant was itself a substantial technological step. In 2026, producers are being asked to consider cloud platforms, connected fleets, real-time operational data, APIs and artificial intelligence while continuing to run plants and deliver material every day.
Command Alkon’s history has followed that progression from individual automation towards connected operations. Its next test is whether the accumulated products, acquisitions and operational knowledge can function convincingly as a unified platform rather than simply a broad software portfolio.
Willoughby sees continuity between the small company established in 1976 and the business entering its second half-century.
“Fifty years ago, five people set out to build software that actually fits the industry they were serving,” said Willoughby. “That instinct hasn’t changed. What’s changed is the scale at which we can deliver on it.”
The scale certainly has changed. The underlying problem remains remarkably familiar: heavy materials are physical, time-sensitive and unforgiving of poor coordination. Fifty years of computing have not removed that constraint. They have simply created far more sophisticated ways of managing it.
