SRL announces first Adaptive Detection Haul Route Crossing

SRL Traffic Systems has become the first company to supply the construction sector with a mobile haul route crossing (HRC) product with integrated adaptive detection technology, designed to keep road and construction traffic flowing smoothly and safely.

The Haul Route PLUS (patent pending) system by the UK and RoI’s largest manufacturer and supplier of mobile intelligent transport solutions (ITS), facilitates the safe and efficient crossing of public highways by haul route plant and has been designed with sustainability in mind.

It incorporates mobile traffic signals operating to timings that respond to the actual flow of construction vehicles rather than in set phases selected to accommodate the slowest plant, increasing efficiency and reducing carbon emissions caused by sitting vehicles.

SRL’s Multiphase ADS (adaptive detection system) technology incorporates a high accuracy radar detector which collects data about real time highway and construction traffic volumes and speeds and adjusts green time accordingly.

Haul Route Plus is the only wireless mobile HRC, facilitating swift and easy installation and minimising the costs and restrictions incurred by cabling, which can easily be damaged.

Mobile variable message signs (VMS) and INSTABOOM solar/hybrid work-zone protection barriers are integral to the comprehensive new solution.  An “all red facility” ensures barriers stay open until plant is safely across the highway, ensuring that moving, fully loaded plant vehicles are not caught in the central area.

SRL developed Haul Route PLUS in response to a request by Chevron, for use on Costain’s £330m A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross upgrade project in Cornwall.  A unit comprising eight sets of signals, two VMS and four barriers was installed in May 2022 and since commissioning, has allowed construction vehicles to safety cross a main highway while minimising congestion.

Said Chevron’s operations manager, Martin Hebditch: “The system was used intensively and performed exceptionally well, minimising potential disruption to traffic on the extremely busy A3075 diversion route.  Both Chevron and Costain were extremely impressed.”

SRL CEO, Adrian Murphy, added: “Haul Route PLUS keeps SRL at the cutting edge of technological innovation and is one of a number of products we have developed and are developing to save National Highways, local authorities, contractors and traffic management companies time and expense, to reduce the environmental impact of construction works, and to make negotiating works easier for the public.”

Haul Route Plus was developed at SRL’s new Technical and Innovation Centre.  The 6,000 sq ft Nottingham facility accommodates and unites the company’s technical and compliance team, providing dedicated facilities to support not only the design of new systems but also the construction and testing of prototypes.

Said SRL’s business development director, Iain McDonald: “The launch of the Technical and Innovation Centre supports our technical and compliance team as they focus the development of industry-leading products such as Haul Route Plus.”

SRL will be demoing Haul Route PLUS at the Highways UK exhibition at the NEC on the 2nd and 3rd of November and have invited all attendees to come and see the new plant crossing solution for themselves on stand E1.

SRL provides a comprehensive portfolio of mobile ITS products and systems, comprising VMS, CCTV, traffic and pedestrian signals, signal bags, work-zone protection barriers and ANPR. Its products are available both for sale and hire.  The company has the industry’s largest distribution network comprising over 30 depots, including the UK’s largest.  It is the only ITS manufacturer available to customers on site 24/7, 365 days a year.
