Iteris wins 4.5 year contract for San Mateo County Smart Corridor Project

Iteris, Inc., the world’s trusted technology ecosystem for smart mobility infrastructure management, today announced the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County (C/CAG) has awarded Iteris an almost $1.0 million, multi-year contract to support its countywide Smart Corridor Project.

Under the terms of the managed services contract, Iteris will continue to monitor the C/CAG’s San Mateo County Smart Corridor System network and ITS devices and provide support to the Smart Corridor maintenance contractor, as it has been since 2013.

The San Mateo County Smart Corridor project is a venture of considerable countywide significance. Its overarching objective is to enhance the mobility of local arterial streets by implementing an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure. This system includes a network of interconnected traffic signal systems, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, dynamic message signs, and vehicle detection systems, strategically deployed along predefined local streets and state routes. These ITS enhancements furnish local municipalities and Caltrans with the essential tools for day-to-day traffic management, capable of addressing both recurring and non-recurring traffic congestion issues.

The Smart Corridor project not only seeks to optimize the efficiency of the existing transportation network but also aims to create smoother traffic flows, resulting in improved safety for motorists and reduced travel times for commuters. Simultaneously, the initiative endeavours to mitigate the ripple effects of freeway incidents on local streets through proactive traffic management measures.

The completed segments of the project span from the City of San Bruno at its northern extremity to the Santa Clara County line within the City of East Palo Alto. Anticipated for commencement in the spring of 2021, the South San Francisco segment is poised to enter the construction phase. Meanwhile, the Northern Cities project, encompassing the Cities of Daly City, Brisbane, and Colma, currently finds itself in the environmental clearance phase.

This ambitious undertaking draws its financial support from a diversified funding pool. The sources include the Transportation Fund for Clean Air fund, contributed by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the Traffic Light Synchronization Program, funding from Measure M (a $10 Vehicle Registration License fee in San Mateo County), and a State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) grant.

Iteris has supported the project for over a decade and plays a crucial role in the ongoing maintenance of the network and equipment, modernization of Smart Corridor infrastructure, and integration of new cities onto the Smart Corridor system.

“We are proud to continue to support C/CAG of San Mateo County’s Smart Corridor project goals of improving safety and mobility in the region,” said Steven Bradley, regional vice president, mobility professional services at Iteris. “The expansion of this contract represents continued demand for Iteris’ managed services in northern California and will serve to decrease congestion in the area while improving sustainability.”
