Komatsu unveils WA170M-11 Next-Generation Compact Wheel Loader

Komatsu has raised the bar in the 10-tonne compact wheel loader category with the launch of the WA170M-11. Developed by Komatsu Germany GmbH – Construction in Hannover, the new model introduces a fresh level of adaptability by offering two distinct loader linkage options, making it one of the most versatile machines in its class.

The engineering team opted for a rigorous development path, extending the conventional 100-hour testing programme to an extensive 500-hour trial. This expanded real-world testing phase ensured that the WA170M-11 could deliver performance, comfort, and efficiency under diverse working conditions.

Real-World Testing Builds Real-World Confidence

To fine-tune the WA170M-11 before market release, Komatsu partnered with multiple customers across Europe. Among them was Kompostwerk Hellefeld Höhe GmbH, a German organic waste processing facility, where operators put the machine through its paces on varying terrain and environmental conditions.

Thorsten Schmidt, a seasoned operator from Kompostwerk Hellefeld Höhe GmbH, shared his experience: “It’s been great to be involved in the testing of the WA170M-11. Working collaboratively with Komatsu means the machines are more than optimised. The machine is very stable, and the cabin is spacious with excellent all-round visibility, including a clear view. Operability is smooth and intuitive, making it comfortable and efficient to work with throughout the day.”

The feedback from operators like Schmidt helped Komatsu engineers refine the loader’s performance, ensuring it met the real demands of professionals working in waste management, construction, and industrial operations.

Tool Linkage Brings New Flexibility

For the first time in this class, Komatsu has introduced its “Tool Linkage” kinematics – a feature previously reserved for larger wheel loaders. Customers can now choose between the traditional Z-kinematics or the Tool Linkage setup, giving them greater flexibility to handle a wider range of attachments.

Henrik von Werder, Product Manager at Komatsu Europe, elaborated: “Offering our Tool Linkage kinematics for the WA170M-11 means the machine can be used flexibly with existing attachments and across a wide variety of tasks – creating additional value for our customers.”

This dual-linkage configuration enables operators to optimise the loader for their preferred working style or specific site requirements. Whether moving materials in tight construction zones or managing bulk handling in recycling facilities, the WA170M-11 can adapt effortlessly.

Designed for Power, Comfort and Control

The WA170M-11 is powered by a 96 kW Stage V diesel engine, delivering robust performance with lower emissions and fuel efficiency improvements. The engine complies with the latest EU standards while maintaining the brand’s signature reliability.

Komatsu engineers have prioritised operator comfort as much as performance. The cab design provides outstanding visibility, ergonomic controls, and a quieter working environment, reducing fatigue during long shifts. The machine’s intelligent hydraulic system ensures smooth and precise operation, allowing fine control in delicate handling scenarios.

Quality Built on Customer Collaboration

Testing the machine in real-world jobsite environments was key to achieving Komatsu’s stringent quality benchmarks. Michael Wadsack, Senior Product Manager at Komatsu Europe, explained: “Testing our machines in real jobsite applications is essential to meeting our strict quality standards. This approach ensures our products deliver the reliability and performance our customers depend on.”

This commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement reflects Komatsu’s customer-first philosophy. Each machine represents not only engineering excellence but also an understanding of how people actually use these machines day after day.

Market Response and Customer Reception

Following its market debut at Bauma 2025, the WA170M-11 has already generated significant excitement across Europe. Early customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the loader’s stability, efficiency, and flexibility. Numerous orders have already been placed, signalling strong demand for Komatsu’s latest compact innovation.

With the final testing phase complete, Komatsu is now ready to begin deliveries to customers, confident that the WA170M-11 will set new benchmarks in the compact wheel loader segment.

Building a Sustainable Future Through Innovation

Komatsu’s focus extends far beyond machinery performance. For more than a century, the company has played a central role in advancing technology and sustainability across industries. From mining and forestry to construction and material handling, Komatsu solutions help shape modern infrastructure and resource management worldwide.

The manufacturer continues to invest in smart technologies that enhance safety, productivity, and sustainability. Its digital systems, such as Komtrax and intelligent machine control, are enabling contractors and operators to manage fleets more efficiently, reduce downtime, and optimise fuel consumption.

By blending digital innovation with practical engineering, Komatsu continues to build the foundation for a future where machines work smarter, not just harder.

A New Standard in Compact Wheel Loaders

The WA170M-11 represents a culmination of customer collaboration, precision engineering, and a drive for continuous improvement. Its versatility and strength make it a top choice for operators looking for reliability and adaptability in a rapidly changing industry.

As the construction and waste management sectors move towards cleaner, more efficient operations, Komatsu’s commitment to quality and innovation ensures its machines remain at the forefront of progress.
