Leicester based DAB Civil Engineering Contractors Ltd has rekindled its association with Volvo Construction Equipment products by purchasing three new twenty-two tonne EC220Es from SMT GB for it plant fleet.

This is the first time DAB has considered Volvo excavators after a ten-year spell, according to Co-Director, Mick Merrigan. “Prior to the recession, we ran about a dozen Volvo excavators along with some Volvo articulated haulers but when things got tight we had to look at other manufacturers for our fleet,” he says. “We now have the opportunity to invest in a premium brand once again and the Volvo excavator is a firm favourite with good excavator operators – we know they perform well and above all, they hold a high residual value.”

Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo engine developing 174 nett hp, the EC220E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example, pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco-mode is selected, the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14-vent, climate control system. An adjustable, easy-to-read LCD colour monitor provides ‘real time’ information of machine functions.

Monitoring all this as well as the machine’s whereabouts is made easy thanks to Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system which is standard on these latest additions, and in the opinion of Mick Merrigan, is an important innovative feature for managing DAB Civil Engineering Contractors Ltd plant fleet. CareTrack provides operational data remotely via the internet, including fuel consumption and idle time, all helping to reduce cost of ownership and maximise utilisation.

DAB Civil Engineering Contractors Ltd was founded in November 2000 and is privately owned. The company’s collective experience in the civil engineering and building trade provides expertise in all aspects of the construction industry – from drainage, including groundworks through to heavy civil engineering, to complete construction and management of building projects.
