STRABAG’s Georgiou Secures €125 Million Reid Highway Upgrade in Perth
STRABAG’s Australian subsidiary Georgiou has landed a landmark design and build contract worth €125 million for the upgrade of two critical intersections along Perth’s Reid Highway.
Commissioned by Main Roads Western Australia, the project will see Altone Road and Drumpellier Drive/Daviot Road transformed into bridged interchanges, easing congestion and delivering safer and more reliable traffic movement across one of the region’s busiest freight corridors. Preparatory works are already under way, with completion expected in 2028.
The Reid Highway is more than just a local artery. It serves as a strategic east–west freight and commuter route, linking Perth’s industrial and residential hubs with vital logistics networks. By replacing traffic lights with grade-separated interchanges, the project will cut travel delays, improve freight reliability, and enhance safety for all road users.
Boosting safety and mobility across Perth’s northeast
The northeast corridor of Perth has long been a choke point for freight operators and commuters alike. With growing population and industrial expansion, the demand for reliable and efficient mobility has never been greater. The Reid Highway upgrade addresses these challenges head-on, easing traffic pressures and providing smoother journeys across the corridor.
The project isn’t just about vehicles. Cyclists and pedestrians stand to benefit from a new bridge and several underpasses that will provide safer access to the popular Swan Valley wine and tourism region. By improving multi-modal connections, the development also reflects the state’s wider ambitions to create inclusive, sustainable transport networks.
The initiative is being jointly funded by the Australian Federal Government and the Government of Western Australia, underscoring its significance to both regional growth and national infrastructure priorities.

STRABAG and Georgiou
Georgiou’s integration into the STRABAG Group in March 2025 has quickly paid dividends. This contract demonstrates the strength of combining local expertise with the resources of a global construction giant. STRABAG, headquartered in Europe, has expanded its international portfolio with the acquisition, strengthening its foothold in a market known for high compliance standards and stable conditions.
Siegfried Wanker, Member of the Management Board for STRABAG SE’s International + Special Divisions segment, emphasised the strategic importance of the deal: “Georgiou and STRABAG are proud to be delivering this major infrastructure project in Australia. Australia is a prime example of our principle of global-local presence. This project marks a milestone in our shared journey and highlights the potential of our long-term partnership.”
By leveraging STRABAG’s global know-how and Georgiou’s deep local knowledge, the partnership is set to deliver a transformative project that will reshape Perth’s mobility landscape.
Wider impact on Australia’s infrastructure ambitions
The Reid Highway upgrade comes at a time when Australia is investing heavily in road and transport networks. According to Infrastructure Australia, road freight volumes are projected to grow by nearly 35% over the next two decades. Projects like Reid Highway are essential in meeting this demand, ensuring goods move efficiently while keeping commuters safe and reducing bottlenecks.
Western Australia, in particular, is prioritising freight efficiency to support its resource-driven economy. The state’s freight task is among the largest in the country, fuelled by mining, agriculture, and exports. Improved highway infrastructure not only supports economic growth but also helps reduce vehicle emissions by cutting idling times and providing smoother traffic flows.
Cycling, tourism and community benefits
Beyond freight and commuters, the Reid Highway upgrades are poised to benefit local communities and the wider economy. The inclusion of pedestrian and cycle facilities aligns with Perth’s active transport strategy, encouraging healthier and more sustainable travel choices. For the Swan Valley, one of the state’s most visited tourism destinations, improved accessibility will strengthen visitor numbers and support local businesses.
The project also reinforces a broader shift in infrastructure design that balances efficiency with community benefits. Rather than treating highways solely as freight corridors, planners are ensuring they serve multiple user groups, enhancing overall liveability.
STRABAG’s global innovation footprint
STRABAG is no stranger to delivering complex, high-value infrastructure. With around 86,000 employees worldwide and an annual output volume of €19 billion, the group operates across the full construction lifecycle, from design and construction to operations, facility management, and redevelopment.
Its reputation for innovation is underpinned by more than 250 innovation projects and 400 sustainability initiatives. These range from advanced digital design platforms and modular construction to carbon reduction strategies. STRABAG’s commitment to climate-conscious building has seen the company emerge as a leader in responsible infrastructure delivery.
The acquisition of Georgiou adds Australia to its already extensive global footprint, which includes operations across Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. For STRABAG, this diversification enhances resilience and opens new pathways for long-term growth.

Strengthening global-local partnerships
The Georgiou-STRABAG collaboration is a textbook case of how international partnerships can accelerate infrastructure development. By pooling resources and sharing expertise, both companies are better equipped to tackle complex projects, deliver efficiencies, and meet the highest safety and environmental standards.
Local contractors gain access to international best practice and advanced technologies, while global players benefit from on-the-ground insights and regional networks. It’s a model that increasingly defines the future of infrastructure delivery worldwide.
Looking ahead with optimism
The Reid Highway upgrade represents more than a contract win; it symbolises a step forward in Australia’s infrastructure journey. With completion due in 2028, the project will deliver safer, more reliable, and more sustainable transport links for freight operators, commuters, and communities alike.
By combining STRABAG’s global expertise with Georgiou’s local capability, the project showcases how international cooperation can drive national progress. As Australia continues to invest in its infrastructure future, partnerships of this calibre will play a central role in shaping smarter, safer, and more connected cities.
