Inkia Energy is Powering Peru Towards a Greener Energy Future
Inkia Energy is making waves in Peru’s renewable energy sector, with transformative plans set to redefine its position as the country’s largest power generator.
By tapping into the abundant natural resources of Peru, Inkia is ramping up its solar, wind, and hybrid capabilities, paving the way to a more sustainable future. The company’s ambitious plans put them on course to become the dominant force in renewable energy in the region—let’s explore how they plan to achieve this.
Solar Expansion Plans
Inkia Energy, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Kallpa, has received the green light for the expansion of its solar power plant, currently under construction in Southern Peru.
Known as ‘Sunny,’ this project is located in a region recognised as a global solar resource hub. The environmental approval will bring the Sunny project from 228 megawatts peak (MWp) to a total of 338 MWp, significantly boosting the renewable energy supply to Peru’s National Interconnected Grid. The expanded solar farm is expected to be fully operational by the latter half of 2025.
Inkia has gone a step further by facilitating the development of two more adjacent solar projects, having signed energy and International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) off-take agreements. These projects collectively represent around 1 gigawatt peak (GWp) of renewable capacity, making a significant contribution to Peru’s green energy objectives. By the fourth quarter of 2025, these solar projects are expected to go online, reinforcing Inkia’s commitment to boosting the country’s renewable energy capacity.
Wind Projects in the Pipeline
While solar power continues to be a strong focus, Inkia Energy is not placing all its bets on the sun. The company also has wind energy on its radar, with plans for two major wind projects with a combined capacity of over 600 megawatts (MW). These projects are expected to launch in 2026, further diversifying Inkia’s energy portfolio and helping secure a continuous, reliable supply of renewable power.
These initiatives illustrate Inkia’s strategy of combining different energy sources to maximise reliability and efficiency. Wind power, being naturally complementary to solar, helps cover periods when sunlight is scarce, providing a consistent energy supply and reducing reliance on non-renewable sources.
Diversified Energy for Greater Reliability
Inkia’s plans don’t stop at wind and solar power. The company is adding several Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to its energy mix. These BESS installations will play a crucial role in addressing renewable energy shortfalls, enabling the storage of excess power generated during peak solar and wind periods. This stored power can then be released to stabilise the grid during periods of low generation or high demand—a common challenge for renewable energy sources.
By adding these new projects to its existing 2,237 MW capacity, which includes hydroelectric and efficient natural gas generation, Inkia aims to position itself as Peru’s most diversified power company. Their goal is to not only generate green energy but to ensure a reliable and stable supply that meets the growing demand of the country.
A Commitment to Sustainable Growth
Beyond large-scale renewable generation, Inkia Energy has also taken steps to meet the energy needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through its retail vehicle, Kondu. Kondu has quickly grown to become one of the biggest players in the SME market segment, offering tailored behind-the-meter energy solutions to meet specific client needs. This is not just about supplying power; it’s about empowering businesses with the ability to manage their own energy requirements effectively.
With Kondu at the forefront of delivering bespoke energy solutions, Inkia demonstrates its dedication to covering all facets of energy demand—from major infrastructure developments to small business needs. This diversified approach ensures that Peru’s energy transformation is not only top-down but is also inclusive of the smallest consumers.
Expanding Inkia’s Reach
While Peru remains at the heart of Inkia’s ambitions, the company’s influence stretches far beyond national borders. Inkia Energy, through its global operations, has owned and managed energy generation and distribution assets across Latin America, catering to over 2 million customers and boasting 5.5 GW of capacity.
This international experience feeds into their Peruvian strategy, giving Inkia a competitive edge in terms of reliability, expertise, and scalability. By harnessing their regional capabilities, Inkia is set to become a model of renewable energy growth not only in Peru but also throughout Latin America.
A Balanced Energy Mix
Willem Van Twembeke, CEO of Inkia Energy, summed it up best when he said: “Inkia is a developer at its core and was the fastest growing generation company during the last decade. The launch of Sunny marks the beginning of the Inkia 2.0 expansion campaign, aligned with Peru’s energy needs and securing Inkia as a leading energy solutions company in the country.”
Inkia’s unique selling point is its balanced energy portfolio—a mix of renewable sources complemented by efficient natural gas. This balance not only ensures a constant energy supply but also supports Peru’s transition to a low-carbon future without sacrificing reliability. Given the challenges of renewable energy’s intermittent nature, having natural gas as a backup helps to plug the gaps, providing an important safety net.
Such a diversified approach, coupled with Inkia’s investment-grade rating, positions them as a trusted choice for clients looking for both reliable energy and financial stability. As energy markets across Latin America and globally increasingly lean towards sustainability, Inkia’s emphasis on a balanced and robust energy mix provides a significant advantage.
Driving Peru’s Green Energy Transformation
Inkia Energy is leading Peru into an era of renewable energy transformation. Their commitment to expanding solar and wind capabilities, coupled with investment in energy storage and SME support, makes them a formidable force in the nation’s power sector. By leveraging its diversified energy mix and regional experience, Inkia is well-placed to meet Peru’s growing energy needs sustainably.
Inkia’s ambition to become the largest renewable energy producer in Peru is not just about numbers and capacity; it’s about empowering an entire country to achieve its energy potential while ensuring reliability and sustainability. Their balanced portfolio, expanding renewable initiatives, and focus on customer-specific solutions make Inkia a company to watch as Peru’s green energy journey unfolds.
