China funds Jamaica’s US$348 million South-East coastal highway project
Jamaican Finance and Public Service Minister Audley Shaw will travel to the People’s Republic of China next week to sign an agreement with the China EXIM Bank for the construction of the South East coastal highway project at a cost of approximately US$384 million.
The Cabinet gave approval last year for the Government to enter into a contract with China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) to undertake the construction of the new highway that will run from Harbour View in Kingston, through Morant Bay in St Thomas, and on to Port Antonio, Portland. The design allows for a four-lane carriageway from Harbour View to Bull Bay, which will be reduced to three-lanes and then two lanes as it continues to Port Antonio.
In the planning is an extension of the east-west toll road from May Pen in Clarendon to Williamsfield in Manchester.
